Pool Excavation – The Costs

Swimming pool excavation is the first phase in the construction of your new pool.  This is the point where your back yard takes on more of the appearance of a destruction zone than a place to host neighborhood parties.  Walls are removed, plants are uprooted and a mechanical, parallel rut is embedded into the side yard of your home.

It’s just part of the swimming pool building process.

These machines and the process for removing all of that dirt takes a toll on your yard.  An average pool, roughly 30 feet long by an average depth of 4 feet has nearly 85 cubic yards of dirt.  Dirt, of an average density, weighs 120 pounds per cubic foot.  Seeing how there are 27 feet in a cubic yard of dirt, your excavator need to remove 137 tons of dirt from your yard.

That’s roughly 13 truckloads of dirt.

The problem is not all yards are the same.  Some homes have large side yards that are able to accommodate a truck and a full size excavator down the side of the house.  Other times your home’s construction access may only allow for a mini-excavator.  The cost of your swimming pool excavation is determined by the size of your pool and the construction access.

Measure the width of the access at all points.  Some common choke points include gas meters or hose bibs, air conditioning units, and the overhead eves of your house.  Turning radius and even the slope of the yard can affect what type of machinery an excavator can use to dig your pool.

Your best bet is to have each excavation subcontractor pre-site your home to determine a proper estimate for your pool excavation costs.

The excavator sets the stage for the rest of the project.  They establish the foundation and set the elevation by which the rest of the trades use to build your pool.   Again, depending on the size of your pool and the equipment required to dig your pool, the excavation should only take a day or two to complete.  Once your pool is dug the dust can be swept and the rest of your pool construction process can begin.
